Root Canal Treatment Q&A
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is one of the most common types of oral surgery used to preserve a permanent tooth and prevent the need for an extraction.
During root canal treatment, Dr. Jabaiti carefully removes the pulp of your affected tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Dental pulp allows you to feel sensations like hot and cold, but it isn’t necessary for a tooth’s survival. Eradicating the pulp stops the spread of infection and enables you to bite, chew, and speak without pain or discomfort.
Why would I need root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment relieves pain caused by infected or inflamed tooth pulp. Some of the most common causes of damaged pulp include:
- Deep decay
- Multiple dental procedures on the same tooth
- Chipped tooth
- Cracked tooth
- Injury to the tooth, such as a fall or sudden impact
If you have damaged or inflamed tooth pulp, you experience pain, swelling, and a sensation of warmth in your gums. This makes daily tasks like biting and chewing painful. It might also interfere with your ability to brush or floss your teeth.
What happens during root canal treatment?
Dr. Jabaiti performs root canal treatment onsite as an outpatient procedure. At the beginning of your appointment, he administers local anesthetics to numb your tooth roots and gums. Next, he creates an access hole in the top of your affected tooth and carefully removes the damaged or infected pulp.
After removing the pulp, Dr. Jabaiti rinses the interior of your tooth (the root canal) with an antiseptic solution. He then fills your root canal with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.
Lastly, Dr. Jabaiti takes impressions of your tooth and sends the impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures a permanent crown. He covers the top of your tooth with a sealant and sends you home.
About a week later, you return to Avra Dental for a follow-up appointment. At this appointment, Dr. Jabaiti removes the sealant and bonds a permanent crown to your affected tooth, restoring its size, shape, and strength to its near-original condition.
What is recovery like following root canal treatment?
Following root canal treatment, Dr. Jabaiti writes a prescription for oral antibiotics and gives you a list of recovery instructions.
In the first few days after your appointment, it’s normal to experience some pain and swelling. Make sure to take your medications as prescribed, avoid smoking, and take over-the-counter pain medicine as necessary. Within a week’s time, your mouth will be back to normal.
