Crowns Q&A

What is the purpose of a crown?

Dr. Jabaiti uses a crown to cover the part of your tooth that is visible above your gumline. This can have both restorative and cosmetic functions, like:

  • Protecting a weakened tooth from further damage
  • Holding together a cracked tooth
  • Replacing a large filling
  • Restoring a significantly worn down tooth
  • Covering a misshapen tooth

Dr. Jabaiti can also use a crown to attach to a dental implant, effectively replacing a missing tooth.

How are crowns and veneers different?

It’s easy to confuse crowns and veneers since they’re both restorations permanently bonded to your tooth. A crown, however, covers the entirety of your tooth above the gumline, while veneers only cover the front portion.

Veneers are used more for cosmetic reasons, while crowns can serve both cosmetic and restorative functions. At Avra Dental, Dr. Jabaiti offers Lumineers®, an ultra-thin version of veneers that can be applied with minimal enamel removal.

What are crowns made from?

There are several materials that can be used for a crown. Some of the types of crowns offered at Avra Dental include:

  • Porcelain
  • Zirconia
  • Gold
  • eMax® (lithium discillitated ceramic)

Each of these materials has different advantages, depending on where in your mouth your crown is going to be located and your unique needs. Dr. Jabaiti helps you select a crown material best suited for your smile.

How do you install my crown?

The first step in installing your crown is to make room for it in your mouth, so Dr. Jabaiti carefully and precisely removes some enamel from your tooth.

After your tooth is prepared and ready for the crown, he uses state-of-the-art technology to take an impression of your smile. He sends that impression to a lab that specializes in making dental restorations, where a technician uses it to design and fabricate your crown so that it fits perfectly.

The lab can take up to two weeks to finish making your crown, during which time you wear a temporary restoration. When your permanent crown is ready, you come back to Avra Dental, and Dr. Jabaiti seals it in place.
